The Golden Locker

Many people dream of finding treasure. I am an avid scuba diver, so I always wish I could have that awesome diving adventure where I find gold at the bottom of the sea. Who knew that I would actually find gold at the bottom of a sea of dirty, dusty, deteriorating boxes of newspapers, wrapped glasses, crumbling books, clothes and just, well &..junk.

My grandfather was a junk collector. Maybe that s where I got a little of it from. I remember as a kid, always being around my grandfather and his multiple storage sheds of junk. Don t throw that out! he d say, I can use that one day! I would reply, Really, Grandpa? You ve had this for 10 years and you ve never used it. There s too much stuff here that you never use. Why don t you sell it or take it to the dump? Then he d say, That s worth money or That will be worth money one day, you ll see. I would just shake my head and keep working, moving this junk from this pile to that junk in that pile. What a waste if all that it does is just sit here, I would think to myself. He never did get rid of any of it and most of it really was just junk, scrap metal.

I am a bit of a collector, myself. I collected all of the old Garfield books and novelties from the 70 s and early 80 s. I don t even know what happened to them over the years. Now I see that stuff being sold in auctions to collectors. Funny, isn t it? I do a bit of antiquing now on weekends, occasionally an estate auction or two and even some storage auctions. The trouble with the storage auctions is that now that storage auction reality TV shows are so popular, everyone wants in the game and drives up the competition. But a good eye and attention to detail can give you an advantage. When everyone else saw that they didn t want to pay for hauling away someone else s dusty trash, I saw a small old stoneware crock poking out of the trash that I thought was very interesting. My first guess was that it might be from the early 1900 s. After my final and winning bid of $100, I found out that this crock was from the late 1800 s and valued between $300 and $500. I was already excited. I couldn t wait to find out what other treasure was awaiting my discovery in this sea of deterioration.

Boy, did I get dirty. Everything I touched just crumbled and turned to black dust. I was wearing a dust face mask and was still coughing and sneezing as I carefully looked through everything. That s trash, that s trash, that s trash. That would be worth some good money if it wasn t so deteriorated. Now it s trash. The crock got me excited and pumped, but I was quickly losing steam. Everything was just rotting trash. Anything that could have been valuable was either badly broken or deteriorated beyond the point of no return. I started to think that my crock, which I was so excited about, wasn t going to be enough to cover the $100 I paid for the locker, 6 hours of my time, and the $100 to $200 it was going to cost me to get rid of all this garbage. So far, all I have that isn t going to the dump is my crock, 3 boxes of books ranging from 1919 through 1952, a small old clock from the 30 s, a cool cigar box and a couple of cool lighters. Whoopity Dooo!!!!! Oh well, It was an adventure. Wait, there is another box right here in the back. I reach down to pick it up. Ooooof!! Great! Another box of books! Damn! I move it over to the other boxes of books and didn t even look in it. My excitement is all long gone. I looked around at all the trash and starting thinking what next steps and phone calls I have to make to my trash hauling guy to get this out of here. I call him on the phone, Hey man, I ve got a large storage locker full of trash, can you come take it out? Yup!, My trash hauler says. I can do it tomorrow. Well this didn t turn out so great. Let me see what kind of books I got in this last box & & & &..Holy Crap!

Captain America is now staring me right in the face. This is cool. I know that some old comic books are worth something, but I have no idea what. Let s see what else is in here. Batman, Detective Comics, Jungle Comics, Superman, Captain Marvel & &.awesome!! How many are here, 1,2,3,4,5,6 &.10 & &.20 & &30 & &.60 & &..100 & &..144 Golden Age comic books!!!! Wow!!! I better get these checked out. After 10 hours or more of internet research, showing my collection to two local dealers and one collectibles auction site, everyone wanted my comic books. I spent the next two weeks reading up on comic collecting, talking with dealers, reviewing auction sites, talking with graders, spending hours on the internet, several phone calls, etc., etc. This whole process finally led me to Comic Connect in Manhattan, NY. A couple of phone calls later I m scanning a few comics and emailing them to Jessica. Next thing I know, I get an email from Vincent Zurzolo. A quick name Google and I find out that one of the top leading guys in the comic collecting world has some questions for me. I write one sentence in an email response to Vincent and before I even finish, my phone rings. Hello, this is Vincent Zurzolo. Vincent and I talked on the phone for the next 40 minutes. This guy showed so much enthusiasm for my collection, it got me really excited. This is it, I thought. This is the guy I need to be speaking with. A week later I find myself carefully packing up this collection for a trip to the Big Apple. After reviewing my collection in his gallery in Manhattan, Vincent and I sealed the deal to bring this great collection to the public. I can t wait for my next diving adventure. Happy treasure hunting.
