Jack Kirby cvr/art; 1st issue as "Thor" title (formerly Journey into Mystery); Classic Thor vs Hercules cover
Pennsylvania Dutch Copy
Picking up where Journey Into Mystery #125 left off, this is the inaugural issue of Thor, a series that would go on to become one of the highlights of Marvel’s output for years to come. The titanic clash of gods on the cover of this historic key issue was a savvy move, copying the success of Thing vs. Hulk covers to entice readers into buying the book. Inside the classic Kirby illustration is a tale featuring Thor and Hercules duking it out over Jane Foster’s affections, while Odin lurks behind the scenes playing puppet master and manipulating the battle in Herc’s favor in order to punish his rebellious son. The secondary feature in the issue focuses on Loki and Thor and their troubles with Ula, Queen of the Flying Trolls. Following the release of “Thor: Love and Thunder” this first issue is sure to see some increased interest, Jane Foster and Loki are currently some of the MCU’s hottest characters, making this book a target for investment collectors.

Artist Information

Jack Kirby is called 'The King of Comics' for a reason, during his career that spanned six decades he gave us many of the most iconic characters the medium would ever see. From his introduction of Captain America at the height of World War II it was clear he wasn't your ordinary comics artist. But it was his creative explosion at Marvel Comics in the 1960's that cemented his legacy, over a short period of time Kirby would give us The Fantastic Four, Iron Man, The Hulk, The X-Men, Thor, Ant-Man and Nick Fury just to name a few. Kirby would then go to DC and create his Fourth World, introducing Darkseid, Mister Miracle, The New Gods and a host of cosmic supporting players. Long live The King.
