Adorned with a classic Jim Steranko cover, issue #49 of the X-Men deals with the subject of the growing population of mutants around the world and their struggle to exist in a society controlled by humans. After the FBI shuts down the X-Men, Angel returns to the X-mansion to take one last look around, this is when Cerebro warns him of a spike in mutant activity. The X-Men decide to investigate, and discover the plot by an agent of Magneto's named Mesmero, to turn mutants againt humans and take over the world. On their mission they run into a hypnotized woman named Lorna Dane who they take under their wing, it turns out this mystery woman is not only a mutant, but an object of worship to evil mutants in her presence. The follow up story "A Beast is Born" sheds some light on Hank McCoy's humble beginnings.

Artists Information

James F. Steranko is an American graphic artist, comic book writer/artist, comics historian, magician, publisher and film production illustrator. His most famous comic book work was with the 1960s superspy feature "Nick Fury, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D." in Marvel Comics' Strange Tales and in the subsequent eponymous series. Steranko earned lasting acclaim for his innovations in sequential art during the Silver Age of Comic Books, particularly his infusion of surrealism, pop art, and graphic design into the medium. His work has been published in many countries and his influence on the field has remained strong since his comics heyday. He went on to create book covers, become a comics historian who published a pioneering two-volume history of the birth and early years of comic books, and to create conceptual art and character designs for films including Raiders of the Lost Ark and Bram Stoker's Dracula.

Don Heck was an American comics artist best known for co-creating the Marvel Comics characters Iron Man and the Wasp, and for his long run penciling The Avengers during the Silver Age.

Werner Roth is an American comic book artist who's worked with Marvel's predecessor Atlas during the golden age of comics. Werner was also notably the artist who took over the X-men series after Jack Kirby left. Roth's other famous works include Lorna, the Jungle Girl and Superman's Girlfriend, Lois Lane.
