classic C.C. Beck WWII flag cover
While WWII was raging overseas, the comic book industry was doing their part back home, by boosting morale with citizens and GIs through covers like this one. Captain Marvel is a one-man Iwo Jima, poised heroically with the American flag raised triumphantly in the air, which helped drive sales of war stamps, which were sold to raise money to support the military and could be cashed in for war bonds. Inside the patriotic C.C. Beck cover is an entertaining Captain Marvel story that sees the Big Red Cheese demonstrating his powers for a biographer while he tells his life story to the author who chronicles the hero’s history. The plot turns out to be a ruse for a crooked publisher to cash in on Marvel’s story with some embellished elements, but he gets his just rewards and the Captain ends up with a bestseller on his hands. Fleshed out with Golden Arrow and Ibis the Invincible features, this is a rollicking good time of a Golden Age anthology.

Artist Information

Beck was the artist most closely associated with the original Captain Marvel at Fawcett Comics, he was the main illustrator for Whiz Comics in the Golden Age while also working on Ibis the Invincible and Spy Smasher. Later in his career he specialized in Golden Age recreations, he also created the oddball Fatman and the Flying Saucer title for Milson Publications.
