Creig Flessel cvr/art; rare in any grade (6/37)
Detective Comics #4 features yet another dynamic cover from Golden Age master Creig Flessel, continuing the title's important early role as the comic that brought four-color greatness to the pulp-inspired adventures of various private eyes and adventurers. Those included Speed Saunders, Bruce Nelson, Bart Regan, Buck Marshall, Slam Bradley, and Cosmo, the Phantom of Disguise.
The book also featured inventive bad guys, plus plenty of pulp tropes such as the "Yellow Peril" school of villainy. Detective #4 includes the Chinese villains of the multi-part Bruce Nelson saga "The Claws of the Red Dragon." There's also, however, master detective Mr. Chang (and his assistant Wu) in "The Bloody Will," as Chang solves murders in a mansion after the reading of a will on a stormy night.
