Fred Guardineer cvr/art, Bob Kane art; origin & 1st app. of Three Aces (11/39); 1st time Superman uses his x-ray visionSuperman's powers eventually grew, by the Silver Age, to include super-breath, super-hearing, probably even super-toenail clipping. It's amusing, then, to see how late into his Golden Age run came his first use of X-Ray vision, in this issue, which is capped off by a typically stunning Guardineer dogfight cover. The last non-Superman cover in the series, note that DC was already anxious about losing the attention of new readers attracted by Superman, slapping an iconic Super-image on the upper corner of the logo, as if to say, "No, really, he's in here!" The Superman mythos was slowly but surely building, issue by issue, and this important entry helped create that enduring legend.
Artists Information
A celebrity comic artist of the Golden Age, co-created Batman and Robin with Bill Finger, as his brainchild became more in demand he hired an army of ghost artists to illustrate the dearth of Batman features on the market, but all were credited to Kane. His other achievements include the creation of Catwoman, Two-Face and cartoon character Courageous Cat. Kane was the object of some controversy for taking credit for the art and inspiration of others, but he was also undoubtedly an important figure in the history of comics. He published an updated version of his autobiography "Batman and Me: The Saga Continues" shortly before his death in 1998. He got his start at the Eisner/Iger studio and was inducted into the Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame.
