Curt Swan cvr/art; 1st app. of Krypto (the Superdog); animated DC Super-Pets movie 2022!
Likely influenced by the mid-50’s craze for canine adventure shows like Rin Tin Tin and Lassie, Otto Binder and Curt Swan dreamt up a pet for the teenage Kal-El. In this issue, the first to feature the now-beloved Krypto the Superdog, the space-bound pup arrives on Earth after his ship is knocked off course. Having been the subject of an experiment of Superman’s father, Jor-El, Krypto enjoys many of the same benefits of the humans from his home planet, granting him superpowers like his owner. The reunion was short lived in this issue, as Krypto’s sudden appearance put Superboy’s secret identity at risk. Luckily, interest in the new animal hero was immediate and powerful, and Krypto was soon a featured regular in the Superman/Superboy mythos and continues to be a popular character into the modern day.

Artists Information

Swan was a house artist at DC working on titles like Tommy Tomorrow, he began gravitating towards Superman and his related books, Superboy, World's Finest and Jimmy Olsen, he would eventually leave DC thanks to his personality issue with Editor In Chief Mort Weisinger. He would eventually return and go on to be the artist that defined the look of Superman in the Silver Age, eventually becoming the editor of the title, but after thirty years of keeping up standards of all things Superman, Swan was given the boot in favor of John Byrne's Superman reboot, Swan's comic work began to taper off after this dismissal and he eventually retired, but will forever be recognized as the Silver Age Superman's finest artist.

George Roussos also known under the pseudonym George Bell, was an American comic book artist best known as one of Jack Kirby's Silver Age inkers, including on landmark early issues of Marvel Comics' Fantastic Four. Over five decades, he created artwork for numerous publishers, including EC Comics, and he was a staff colorist for Marvel Comics.
