Whiz Comics #17 has a brilliant cover showcasing the robust talents of C.C. Beck, the man responsible for the instantly recognizable graphics of Captain Marvel’s exploits during the Golden Age. It is quite obvious why DC sued Fawcett for copyright infringement over their lifting of several key components from Superman’s bag of tricks, including direct imitations of cover concepts. The borrowed ideas have no real negative impact on the brilliance of Beck’s sure-handed line work, which stands alone apart from the controversies surrounding this hero. The issue contains two exciting Spy Smasher storylines, the first, handled with Beck’s typical elegance. The remainder of the anthology tales also feature above average art and plotting, Ibis the Invincible and Golden Arrow both make appearances in rousing adventure yarns that add to the overall appeal of this comic.
