WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING
"I shop at Metropolis for their selection and consistent grading. I know I'm going to get a good book for a fair price."
- Tom P., Nebraska The Metropolis Survey
Dear Comic Fans,
I just flew back from the 2002 Chicago Wizard World Convention and boy are my arms tired! The show was I must say a little disappointing this year. It is not that sales were down but rather that I did not have quite the buying show I usually do. Chicago used to be known as "The Buying Show". Every year I am able to purchase a tremendous amount of quality Gold, Silver and Bronze Age material at Chicago. Most years scores of customers usually walk by the booth and sell me their books- this year I think I made 2 quality purchases from behind the booth. Most dealers I spoke with agreed Chicago is not the same. The Internet and the emergence of so many auction companies have taken something away from the magic of going to shows. The only thing that took the sting out of the poor buying at the show was the fact that my partner and I had been purchasing some incredible collections of golden age books just the week before.
Sales at the show were strong and include the following books- Mary Marvel #1 CGC 9.6 $5200.00; Nellie the Nurse #1 CGC 9.6 $500.00; Captain America #5 VG+ $1275.00; Tales from the Crypt #22 NM- Northford Copy $1500.00; Tales from the Crypt #27 CGC 9.4 $1500.00; Vault of Horror #24 NM- Northford Copy $600.00; Strange Adventures #208 CGC 9.8 $750.00; Flash Comics #99 CGC graded Diamond Run Copy $4700.00 and Speed Comics #1 CGC 8.5 Windy City Copy $3800.00.
I want to take a moment to thank all of the dealers and comic collectors who helped to make the show an overall success. I hope to see you all again next year. And once again kudos to the Wizard World staff for a job well done. If you have been to the show you know what I mean and if you have not you should definitely check it out.
